Home EV Charger Installation in Newham
Newham is where the East End meets the Olympic Park. Victorian and Edwardian terraces fill Forest Gate, Manor Park, Plaistow and East Ham, while Beckton, Custom House and parts of Canning Town have later housing with front gardens and hardstanding. Many streets have no private parking at all. If your house does have a drive, a forecourt or a front garden big enough for the car, you can charge at home on your own terms.
EV Install Pro fits Volec, Ohme and EVEC chargers for Newham homeowners from £899, installation included. We survey the wiring and the parking, check your planning position, then confirm one fixed price in writing. We cover E6, E7, E12, E13, E15 and E16. We are straight about the council’s position on pavements, so you know before you book whether a charger can work at your address.

Which Newham Homes Can Have a Charger? A Quick Scorecard
Find the row that sounds like your home. It shows how easy the job usually is and what we look at first.
| Your home | How easy | What we look at first |
|---|---|---|
| Terrace with a paved or gravel front garden | Straightforward | Space for the car off the pavement, and whether a dropped kerb is already in place |
| House with a front drive in Beckton, Custom House or Manor Park | Very easy | Short run from the meter, a wall near the car |
| Larger house with a side or rear garage | Easy to moderate | Cable run to the garage, plus a socket position clear of the door |
| House with a garden but no way to drive in | Not yet | A new dropped kerb needs council approval before any charger is useful |
| Terrace with only street parking | Not possible at home | Our no driveway guide covers council points and other options |
Not sure which row is you? Send a photo of your frontage. Businesses in Stratford, Canning Town or Silvertown can ask about workplace chargers.

Terraces, forecourts and newer estates all sit within a few miles of each other here, and each asks something different of the install.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Forest Gate, Plaistow and Manor Park
Where a front garden has been paved, a wall charger beside the door is typical. Our terraced house page covers the details.
Houses with drives in Beckton, Custom House and East Ham
Short runs and easy walls make these some of the quickest jobs. A second charger or a larger supply can be planned in at the survey.
Streets with kerbside parking only
If the car lives on the road, a home charger will not work. Read our guide to charging without a driveway in London for what to do instead.

Built for Weather: How a Charger Copes Outside
A front wall takes rain, frost and street dust all year. These are the points that keep a charger working.
Rain and spray
A weatherproof rating of IP66 means the case is sealed against heavy water jets. The Volec Pulse carries that rating, so a downpour or a splash from the road is no concern.
Frost and cold snaps
Chargers sit outside all winter. The unit is built for UK temperatures, and a socketed model keeps the cable indoors, away from ice.
Dust and grit
Busy roads leave a fine film on walls. A sealed housing keeps it out, and a wipe with a damp cloth is all the cleaning needed.
Tidy cable handling
Hang a fitted lead on its holster or keep a loose lead in the boot. Either way it is off the ground, away from wheels and feet.
Compare the Volec Pulse, Ohme Home Pro and EVEC Home Charger pages, or read tethered and untethered chargers.
Get a quoteProtect Your Battery: Stopping at 80 Percent or Charging to 100
A smart charger lets you decide how full the battery gets each night. Most apps and cars include a limit setting.
Stop at about 80 percent. Good for everyday journeys and kinder to many batteries over the years.
Charge to 100 percent. Better before a long trip, ideally timed to finish just before you leave.
Let the tariff decide. If you are on a cheap night rate, a schedule fills the battery in that window. Our guide to home charging costs shows how the savings add up.
More on the technology is in our smart charger guide.
Newham Charger Rules: Pavements, Gullies and Planning
Cables across the pavement
The council says running a charging cable over the footway is generally not permitted because of the risk to pedestrians. A cover that meets ISO standards, has black and yellow hazard markings and comes off straight after charging is accepted only by exception.
Pavement gullies
The council says none are currently available in Newham. It is looking at practice elsewhere and may consider a pilot, but no decision has been made.
Planning and conservation areas
Some home installs fall under permitted development if conditions are met, such as a wall unit staying under 0.2 cubic metres. Conservation areas and listed buildings face extra controls, and we check your address.
Wiring and certificate
We test your consumer unit and earthing, notify your network operator and hand you your Electrical Installation Certificate.

Newham Home Charger Questions
I have a paved front garden on a Forest Gate terrace. Can I have a charger?
Often yes, provided the car can legally park on that space, which usually needs a dropped kerb. A compact wall charger beside the door is typical. Our guide to terraced house chargers has more.
My car parks on the road outside. Is there any way to charge at home?
Not with a home charger. The council says running cables across the pavement is generally not permitted, and no pavement gullies are available. Our no driveway guide sets out other options.
Does Newham let you use a cable cover on the pavement?
Only by exception. The council describes an interim cover meeting ISO standards, with black and yellow hazard markings, used only while charging and removed straight away. It is not permission for anything permanent, and you carry the responsibility. We would not fit a plan that depends on it.
Will the council add pavement gullies?
The council says none are currently available, and it is reviewing practice elsewhere. A pilot may be considered, but no decision has been made. You can email the council’s EV charging team to ask for a location to be considered.
Does the council have public chargers I can use instead?
Yes. A council release from 2021 mentioned 80 free-standing points and 60 lamp column points, with more planned, and bays are reserved for charging vehicles during set hours. Those figures are dated, so check the council’s current page. A home charger is always free when you need it.
We live in a conservation area. Does that change things?
It can. Conservation areas and listed buildings face extra planning controls, so we check your address first and choose a discreet position. The council also notes that electrical compliance does not mean planning permission is automatically unnecessary.
What size can a wall charger be without planning permission?
The council’s page says a wall unit should not exceed 0.2 cubic metres, and a pedestal should not exceed 1.6 metres in height, with all other conditions met. Our chargers are well within those sizes, but we still confirm your case at the survey.
We have a house in Beckton with a driveway. What happens next?
That is one of the easiest jobs. We look at the meter distance, test the wiring and fix the price. Read about the whole home charger process for more.
We run a business in Stratford or Canning Town. Can you help?
Yes. We fit chargers for staff, visitors and vans at workplaces. See our workplace charging page.
What does it cost, and which charger do you suggest?
Fitted prices are £899 for the Volec Pulse, £995 for the EVEC Home Charger and £999 for the Ohme Home Pro, each confirmed after the survey. The Volec Pulse is our most popular. If you want tariff following, look at the Ohme Home Pro.
